Some days are tougher than a high school Spanish test. In those moments you’ve gotta make a choice. Either fall flat on tour face, or will yourself into success like Lebron coming back from a 20 point deficit. What better way to than to dress up to change your mood. At this point, you probably think I’m wildin’ out like Nick Cannon, with this thought process, but I promise you I’m serious about the impact of dressing up to change your mood. In fact it’s been my life for the past few days.
The world closing down has had no chill on my responsibilities in Corporate America as a VP, at church as an Elder, an Entrepreneur at SUITABULL LLC, a home owner and most importantly as a family man. Sometimes after a short night’s rest, the last thing I want to do is roll out of bed and do it all over again. That snooze button is tempting but let’s face it, all of these responsibilities aren’t gonna take care of themselves. I wish they’d make an app for that, but i guess we’ve got a couple more decades until Elon Musk invests some kind of chore doing bot. So on those days that I didn’t want to get up, I had to dress up my mood and I’ll tell you how.
Colors
Vibrant colors are a great way to wake up out of your funk. Not only do they look good, but they also invoke a response within the brain and in turn affect your mood. According to an early 1940’s study, red and green are two of the most stimulating colors, in the spectrum. Further, when your brain is stimulated by colors like red, green, orange, purple and many others, it may change your breath rate, your heartbeat and the tension in your your body. On the other hand, low stimulation can cause anxiety and limit your concentration. Now that I’ve completely geeked out on the science behind colors, I want to encourage you to wear them. I’m not suggesting that you go overboard with the color and look like an “8 ball” leather jacket, so start small. You can incorporate color in small doses through accessories like a watch band, a pocket square, or even socks! My favorite “go to” is my bright royal blue Apple Watch band. It’s functional, fashionable and effective, but not too intrusive.
You can also wear patterns that bear these colors such as stripes, checks and dots. Get it in any way you can.
Comfortable But Classy
Have you ever had to pass gas in public, but there’s people around so you hold it in. The more you hold it, the more uptight you feel. You start to walk with the funny duck shuffle, you shoulders are all up to your ears and can’t even see your neck. You know that feeling right? That’s the same effect that dressing uptight can have on your whole mood. When you’re dressed relaxed, you tend to carry a relaxed vibe along with it. I’m not suggesting sloppiness. Be appropriate for whatever the occasion calls for, but if you can figure out a way to be comfortable, then go for it. This may mean, cotton instead of wool, rubber sole loafers instead of hard bottoms, or boxers instead of tighty whitey briefs. For many that are working from home like me, that can mean a button up shirt with a more casual pattern or color instead of your standard white or blue dress shirt. Or losing the button up altogether for a colarless henley shirt. Maybe you swap in some nice blue jeans on the bottom instead of slacks. On the days that I know I’ve gotta get it in at work, I dress nice enough for any surprise meetings, but comfortable enough to sit through 5 in a row!
Dont Labor, Plan
The mere thought of getting dressed in the morning can put some folks off. Throwing on some threads can feel like work if
a. You’ve been wearing sweats for the past 14 months
b. You’re too tired to pick your clothes in the morning
c. You don’t like to get dressed period
I’ve had my own half sleep moments of standing in front of the closet, trying to figure it out. But planning helps to get around all of that. Instead of standing in front of your closet every morning. Stand in front of it on Sunday night instead and figure out what you’re going to wear for the entire week. It will be one less decision that you’ll have to make during a hectic week.
Choose Happiness
Finally, many of us get it twisted that we feel how we feel and that’s the end of it. NO! Unless you are a toddler, YOU CAN CONTROL YOUR FEELINGS. Make a conscious decision that you can and will overcome. Even before you know you look good for the day, you need to hope, pray, speak positivity over yourself and choose joy over defeat. I know, it’s hard, but at points where I've felt stuck, I prayed, and made a conscious decision, that I am an overcomer, with God’s help!
Mood changes come in all forms, from mild displeasure to full on depression. Dressing up isn’t the end all be all solution to happiness, but it’s one small step that will surprisingly move you in the right direction. Just try it and you’ll see. If your issue is serious, talk to someone about it, pray about it, whatever you need to do. Just take care of you. That’s the most SUITABULL thing to do.
Stay Suitabull guys.
